I'd just like to mull over the concept further...
This was an interesting concept that I learned just last night. The term is new to me. The concept, well, let's just say I know it pretty well.
The term doesn't really jive with the dictionary definition of default:
a selection made usually automatically or without active consideration due to lack of a viable alternative
That's more like The Fallback Boy. Especially the "due to lack of a viable alternative" part. The Fallback Boy is someone you keep as reserve, whether in full consciousness of doing so or not, for the eventuality that there's no one else. Sort of like a safety net. It's not really nice. It's not really fair for the FB.
The DB on the other hand is the guy you go back to after everything else. Maybe you never really got over that DB and you still entertain the possibility that something could happen. It's possible that he's become the standard that you compare every other guy to. But then he could also be the guy you still like but don't expect anything from anymore.
That last bit is a bit complex to explain but I'm going to try to anyway... He probably used to make your head spin or your heart do weird little jumping jacks. Whatever it is, you liked it. Liked him.
But now, the circumstances are probably different. Things happened. Or, more likely, nothing happened. And then eventually, when you can say it, you say you're over it. But after some time, he still makes you smile. You still get intrigued by his intellectual but chill vibe, or whatever it is that attracted you to him in the first place.
So you realize this and think... "Uh oh. Do I still like him?" Yes, maybe you do. But this time, you don't think of the next step or even the possibility. You just simply like him and that's that.
It's quite possible, actually. To like and not want.. at least in theory.
(This applies to boys as well. They can have their FGs or Fallback Girls and their DGs or Default Girls)
